He starts the week playing general with his own bloodline — ordering his son back from the witness stand because the family has given this court enough. Wednesday the fourth debate plays out in Tuscaloosa without him, and by Friday he has scored it from his armchair: last place for the loudest critic, first place for himself, as always, without even being there. The same Friday an appeals court largely keeps the muzzle on him in the January 6 case, and for one panel the unsinkable voice actually asks what is becoming of the country. Saturday he steadies himself the reliable way — hailing his caucus captains out in the Iowa snow — and on Sunday the answer to everything arrives in capital letters: a statement four pages long, shouted at the whole judicial system from his own masthead.
