物語This week in the saga
The new year opens with homework: a five-page report re-filing the oldest claim of the saga, the stolen election, now recast as the legal foundation for everything — if he was defrauded, he was doing his duty, and if he was doing his duty, he cannot be tried. Then Iowa, a two-way love fest in the snow, four cities in two days with the caucuses nine days out. January sixth passes — three years to the day since the certification riot — and it passes quietly: the man the day was supposed to bury leads every poll, and the cases the day birthed now run in both directions. As if to prove it, Georgia delivers the week's twist — the prosecutor who indicted him stands accused herself, of paying her own romantic partner to run the case. And past midnight on Sunday the week's real weight settles in: on Tuesday an appeals court will hear the question underneath everything. Can a president be tried at all?
