By Thursday they have twelve: a salesman, a teacher, an engineer, two lawyers — a jury of the city that made him, sworn to judge him. He calls the judge conflicted before breakfast and demands the gag order gone by the weekend. Wednesday night a European president calls at the tower, because the world hedges its bets now. Friday he warns that presidential immunity itself is on the line in Washington. Saturday the court week ends at a North Carolina fairground roar, and on Monday the openings begin: the People call it a cover-up, the defense calls it stories — and the first witness through the door is a tabloid publisher.
