This week in the saga

Tuesday the sword falls in the other kingdom: in a Delaware courtroom the rival president's own son is found guilty on every count — by the same machine of justice each side calls rigged when it bites. From the tower, for once, near silence. Thursday he climbs the Hill for the first time since his exile — the party that flinched from him three years ago now files into closed rooms to applaud, and he emerges purring about unity and great poll numbers. Friday he turns seventy-eight under gold balloons at a club ballroom in Palm Beach. Saturday he walks into Detroit — the other kingdom's deepest city — and asks it, from a church hall pulpit, for its crown. Ten days to the stage in Atlanta.
