物語
This week in the saga
Thursday night in Milwaukee the convention crowns him: gauze on his ear, he takes the stage alone and for ten quiet minutes tells the hall about the fairground before the showman returns. Friday he gloats over the ratings and takes a congratulatory call from a wartime president. Then Sunday, 1:46 in the afternoon: a letter, posted to the world — the old king quits the field. No speech, no cameras; a page with a signature. Within the hour the answer comes down from the tower: not fit to run, not fit to serve, never was. By nightfall he is already laughing that the old man will wake tomorrow having forgotten he quit. The opponent he built the whole comeback against is gone — and across the field a new challenger rises. CHAPTER 50 CLOSES.
