This week in the saga
Tuesday holds both halves of his life in one afternoon. First the duel is set: the tenth of September, Philadelphia, the network he is suing, standing up, no notes. Then, four hours later, the prosecutor in Washington files the case again — trimmed to survive the immunity ruling, the same charges wearing a new caption — and the candidate discovers that a machine can be told to stop and simply reload. He counts the days out loud: their own rule says nothing that moves an election inside sixty days of it, and voting begins in ten. Sunday the arithmetic gives way to something quieter. He stands among white stones in Virginia with families who asked him to come, and for one panel the shouting stops.
