This week in the saga

The chapter opens on small enemies. Tuesday morning it is the windmills off New Jersey, Tuesday afternoon it is the museums of the capital — the last remaining segment of woke, and he has instructed his attorneys to go through them the way they went through the universities. Wednesday morning the wind and the sun together are named the scam of the century, and every state that ever trusted them is invited to look at its bills. Thursday the appellate court in New York throws out the half-billion-dollar judgment against him, and the answer is two words in capitals before anything else. Friday the country buys a tenth of a chip company for nothing at all and he reports it as a great honour. And then Friday evening, with all of it done, he stops and writes about a hot afternoon ten years ago in a hotel ballroom in Alabama that could not hold the people who came, and then a convention centre that could not hold them either, and then a stadium that could. It seems like a long time ago, he writes, but it also seems like yesterday.
