Tuesday the other side is described as bankrupt — five hundred million dollars a day, police and soldiers unpaid, an SOS. Thursday the Navy is ordered to shoot and kill any boat laying mines, with no hesitation, and the leadership over there is said to be a fight between hardliners and moderates in which nobody knows who is in charge. Then Saturday night in Washington: gunfire at an event he is attending, a shooter apprehended, a recommendation to let the show go on — and, thirty minutes later, a press conference. By Sunday the lesson has already been drawn, and it is about a building.
