The handover sours: roadblocks at the United Nations, barbs across the wire, a transition that was promised smooth and is anything but. At midnight the fireworks crown the tower and he toasts everyone — including his many enemies, who lost so badly they just don't know what to do. Across the sea a rocket stands wreathed in vapor, and the answer comes in three words: it won't happen. The new year begins its march to the oath.
