This week in the saga

The repeal rises from the dead and clears the House by four votes, and the Rose Garden fills with cheering legislators for what is only half a law — the Senate will melt it down to nothing, but that is a later chapter's grief. The chronicle spends the week watching someone else: the towering marshal, testifying about nausea and duty on Wednesday, crossing the empty plaza under a single lit window by Sunday. The last narration box is one sentence long because nothing else is needed.
