This week in the saga

The testimony duel. The week opens with the phone sharpened at an empty breakfast table; a new marshal for the bureau is named as a silhouette; and on June 8 the dismissed marshal takes the witness table alone — the king asked for his loyalty, say the notes; lies, say the king's men. The morning after, arms flung wide in the gilded office: total and complete vindication. Both sides declare the duel won. Only one of them has a special counsel reading the transcript.
