




At the great farewell he sits among his rivals, calling it not a funeral but a day of celebration, then returns to the war. He names a new chief lawman of the realm — the very man who will one day receive the prosecutor's report — and turns on the disgraced former lawman for the hundreds of times he could not recall. Across the sea a foreign capital burns in revolt, and he seizes on it to mock their grand green accord. And the old war-cry returns, hurled at the faceless press: enemy of the people.
