He declares the desert war won and orders the legions home — and the order costs him the old general of his own war-council, who resigns over the retreat and is thanked in clipped, distant words. Then the government shuts its own doors: America, he says, will fight for every border but its own, no more. Alone in the darkened house on the holiday, waiting for an enemy who has gone home, he pities himself out loud. And through all of it one demand stands unmoved above the dark — the country must have its Wall.
