THE THIRTEENTH. FIFTY-SEVEN GUILTY, FORTY-THREE NOT GUILTY.
TEN VOTES SHORT OF THE TWO-THIRDS. SEVEN OF HIS OWN VOTE TO CONVICT. HE IS ACQUITTED.

This week in the saga
The second trial runs five days and ends ten votes short. Fifty-seven senators vote guilty and forty-three not guilty; seven of his own party cross to convict; the two-thirds never comes. He is acquitted a thousand miles from the chamber, and the whole of the week's record is the single statement that goes out the same afternoon — thanks to his lawyers, thanks to the senators who stood, read out to nobody.
