Eight statements in seven days, the densest week of the chapter. Four of them are endorsements and three of those go out in forty-eight hours — Alabama, Kentucky, and a senator in Wisconsin who has not yet said whether he is running. In between, one line about a congressman under investigation, a newspaper column clipped out and circulated, and a long formal condolence for the death of a consort in England. On the ninth the endorsement goes to the young senator from Florida who fought him for the crown five years ago.
