The chapter closes on the strangest week of the summer: the hearings grind on and he files his nightly review — a kangaroo court, read off a teleprompter — and then his own court starts answering. Thursday the gun ruling: elections have consequences. Friday the crown jewel itself — the old ruling falls to the justices he seated, and the loudest voice in the country posts no words at all. Saturday a crowd in Illinois chants its thanks, and only deep in the small hours does he claim it: not an easy thing to do, but proud to have done it. The summer hands him triumph. The hunt does not pause to watch.
