This week in the saga
The new House meets and cannot choose its Speaker — ballot after ballot fails, the first such deadlock in a century. He spends the nights on the phone with the holdouts and at dawn issues the order: vote for Kevin, close the deal, take the victory. Past one in the morning he decides the chaos is a gift — the crown will be bigger for the struggle. Friday night, on the fifteenth ballot, the gavel finally falls, and in the morning the new Speaker tells the cameras that nobody should doubt his influence. For one week, nobody does.
