物語
This week in the saga
Wednesday the palace waits for a phone call — no one has told him he is being indicted, he writes, but he has assumed for years that he is a target. Thursday at seven the call comes, and he announces it himself before the state says a word. An hour later the roar goes out: an innocent man, the greatest witch hunt of all time. Friday the indictment unseals — thirty-seven counts under the Espionage Act, and the evidence is photographs of the republic's secrets stacked in a bathroom and on a ballroom stage. Saturday dawn he faces the pale sky: America went to sleep with tears in its eyes. Arraignment is set — Tuesday, Miami.
