Tuesday the challenger names a plain midwestern schoolteacher-governor to stand beside her, and his answer is to book the richest man alive for Monday night. Thursday he calls the press to the ballroom himself and stands at the gilt podium for an hour taking every question, promising the largest removal of people in the country's history. Then the weekend turns strange. Photographs come back from her airport rally showing a crowd so large he refuses to believe it exists — no one was there, he says, the picture was manufactured, the whole thing is a fake. It is the oldest quarrel he has: how many people came, and who is allowed to count them. Monday night he puts on a headset in a dark room and talks to the world for two and a half hours, and the servers give out under the weight of the audience.
