This week in the saga
The number falls at last: 1,237, and the nomination no elder could deny him is won — sealed, he declares, with the most votes ever gathered in his party's primary history. Yet the week is ringed with fire: outside the New Mexico hall his enemies burn and wave foreign flags, while inside the hall is big and beautiful. In the small hours his phone glows to mark a new antagonist on the periphery, and on Memorial Day he bows his head among the riders before turning his gaze to the final general, who he says does not have it.
