This week in the saga

The saga catches up to the calendar, and the first week of it is a man with nothing left to conquer. Tuesday he photographs his own building site: a military complex going up at the East Wing, a droneport over a ballroom, the steel already fabricated and waiting on a truck. Wednesday the ledger of victories is read out — a secure border, a giant victory in Venezuela, the denuclearization of Iran — and in the same breath a county in Michigan is called Third World and November is conceded in advance to fraud. Thursday he tells his own senators that ending the filibuster would leave him the last Republican president, then agrees with the communist who wants to end it. Friday two appellate judges stop the work at the East Wing and call a president a temporary tenant of the house. Sunday the reflecting pool is a crime scene. And on Monday the country he decimated asks him for compensation, and he answers with an invoice going back fifty years. He can still open a sea. He cannot pour a slab.
