The tax pages on television are a two-page anticlimax he still cannot let stand; the stateswoman of the old continent gets a cold fireplace and an invoice for vast sums; and on Monday the towering marshal raises his hand and, in one sworn sentence, both denies the wiretap and confirms the investigation. The chapter's namesake accusation dies in that hearing room — and something far larger is born in its place.
