The old soldier-senator returns from surgery with a fresh scar, to the king's loud gratitude — and at two in the morning of July 28 his arm extends into the light and turns down, and seven years of promises die in one gesture. The same night the palace guard changes: a general takes the chief's door. His first order retires the smiling money-man at day eleven, exactly as counted. No chaos in the palace, says the king. None at all.
