The Fake News Awards, promised since Thanksgiving, are bestowed at last — by post, upon the losers — while the golden trophy of the gag gleams beside the phone. Three days later comes the real theater: at midnight on the first anniversary of the oath, the government goes dark. He names the shutdown a present from its givers, frames it around soldiers in the mist, and waits. Seventy-two hours later the other side folds, and the lights come back on.
