The chapter closes on the worst hour of the summer. In a single afternoon the hammer falls twice — his campaign chairman convicted, his longtime fixer pleading guilty — and the investigation reaches his inner circle at last. He turns first on the fixer who broke, with a cold joke that no one should ever hire him; for the chairman who refused to break he offers respect, calling him a brave man. The guilty plea he waves away as no crime at all. And as the week ends an old rival dies: the maverick senator is gone, and even now the king answers only with a few careful words. The lonely summer ends on a lowered flag.
