




Forty-one papers, most of them crowns. On the tenth he tells a party dinner in Tampa that one year from that night there will be a red wave. On the thirteenth he does something the machine has not done before: instead of endorsing a challenger, he advertises the vacancy, listing ten Republican congressmen by name and inviting anyone to come and run at them — and marks three of them, in brackets, challenge accepted. On the fifteenth, after Michigan's senators refuse a forensic audit, he starts endorsing the people who would replace them. And at the end of the week, unprompted, he explains again why he did not attend the inauguration ten months ago. That decision was mine, and mine alone.
