



Thursday the platform that cut his voice off changes hands — its new owner walks in carrying a porcelain sink — and from the breakfast terrace he pronounces it in sane hands at last, though he is very happy where he is. Monday his company went into the dock in Manhattan: three cases now run against him at once through election season, and he stands in the beams and refuses to move. The last week before the vote is drawn like a battle plan — Iowa Thursday, Pennsylvania Saturday, Miami Sunday — and he walks to the plane at dawn.
