Saturday the anthem rises from forty acres of south Texas dust — the rallies, he says, are bigger and better than ever. But Friday the committee's summons reached the fortress gates: documents by the fourth of November, testimony by the fourteenth, and he reads it trusting nobody. Between the two he surveys the moonlit field where his rivals sank and asks the season's only question: who will enter the quicksand next? Sunday night the rain falls on the tower — in the morning, his company goes on trial in Manhattan.
