Tuesday he asks the question aloud — how do you indict an innocent man? Wednesday he blesses the grand jury itself: the evidence is overwhelming, it will never vote against him. Thursday evening the phone lights up, and for the first time in the republic's history a former president is indicted — his furious answer misspells the word into INDICATED. Friday the palace rings with the counterattack. And late on Sunday night he calmly posts his own itinerary to the courthouse. America, he writes, was not supposed to be this way.
