The chapter opens on a Tuesday split-screen the chronicle can only report: in Delaware the rival president's son takes a plea he calls a traffic ticket, while his own prosecutors close in from every direction. He demands Congress investigate the hunters, tells a Washington ballroom the scandal is a hundred times bigger than Watergate — and then, on the week's last night, a cable network plays a leaked tape of his own voice handling a secret. In the dark he answers: the tape is an exoneration.
