The glare taken in a county jail is on shirts and mugs and posters by the weekend, and the money pours in faster than any rally ever raised it. He answers Georgia by mail: two words, not guilty, no cameras, no motorcade. By Sunday the war-cry of the new campaign is written — not an oath of innocence but a question aimed at every kitchen table in the country: were you better off? The hunt wanted a criminal's picture. He is running on it.
