




Wednesday the dead financier's name comes back and is answered with one word — hoax — and a warning that only a very bad or stupid member of his own party would fall into the trap. Friday morning the same hoax is handed to the Attorney General as an investigation into everybody else's friends. Friday at half past eight in the evening he withdraws his support and endorsement from a congresswoman of his own party, in eleven hundred words, and by Saturday morning she is a disgrace to it. The week's last beat runs the other way: a Security Council vote endorses a board of peace, and he will be its chairman.
