In the gold lobby where the escalator once carried him down, he throws away the script and says there were very fine people on both sides — and the words will follow him forever. The bronze generals swing from cranes, the war strategist walks out of the tower with a warm farewell tweet at his back, and forty thousand march across Boston against hate while he applauds from the palace. On the last day the moon devours the sun, and he looks straight into it with bare eyes.
