This week in the saga
At the eleventh hour the neighbour signs, and the gate he had lowered goes back up again. The bargain, he announces in capitals, will be paid for in grain bought from his own farmers. He looks back on the state visit and says he could not have been received more warmly. He admits that hitting back is not what kings are supposed to do — and explains why he does it anyway. The chamber calls up a witness from a scandal fifty years dead, and he dismisses the whole thing as a do-over.
