




The audit he had been demanding since the spring finally reports on the twenty-fourth of September, and it does not say what it was built to say: the auditors' own hand count of Maricopa County leaves him 261 votes short of the official result and the usurper ninety-nine ahead of it. The office issues twenty-two papers in the two days around it, and every one that mentions the audit describes a win. On the twenty-fifth he takes the report to a field in Perry, Georgia and reads the number 44,000 out to a crowd that came for exactly that. In the same week he writes to the Governor of Texas — a state he won — asking for an audit there too.
